Pinterest has taken the interwebs by storm! In the last few months its user base has grown phenomenally.

Between July and December 2011 it grew by 4000% and in January 2012 is became the fastest site in history to break through the 10 million unique visitors mark!

But what is it..?

"Pinterest is a virtual pinboard. Pinterest allows you to organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. You can browse pinboards created by other people to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests."

And what is a pin..?

A pin is an image added to Pinterest. A pin can be added from a website using the Pin It button, or you can upload images from your computer. Each pin added using the Pin It button links back to the site it came from.

Like all the best things in life, Pinterest is simple - it is just a collection of images that you find on line that you like. You “Pin” them to your account, add comments and share them.

Other people can follow you, to see what you’ve pinned, and you can follow others, to see what they’ve pinned. You can also “re-pin” what others have pinned (like a re-tweet on twitter).

This may all sound a bit silly, but that’s what they said about Twitter! It is strangly addictive though, and has a great deal of potential in relation to search engine marketing - All the pinned images have links back to the original source of the image, which could bring in lots of interesting visitors!

It’s a very visual social network (obviously, its all image based!!) and is just quite good fun!
